The Westmore Family
The Westmore family is a famous British, to american emigrated, makeup family consisting of 4 generation so far. Head of the family was George Westmore. He had six sons, Ern, Wally, Perc, Bud, Monte and Frank, who also became the leader in the makeup industry. In 1917 George Westmore founded the first Makeup department in Hollywood.

I will introduce you now one by one to the makeup artist of the Westmore family.
George Westmore:
- lived from 1879- 1931
- born on the Isle of Wight ,England
- became a hairdresser after leaving the army
- emigrated first to Canada and moved afterwards to the USA
- became also a wig maker and invented the hair- lace wig
- 1917 founding of first makeup department in Hollywood
- George Awards, first held in 2000, were named after him
- did the makeup in 'The Education of Elizabeth', ' The three Musketeers', 'Robin Hood', 'The Q Son of Zorro', and many more
Bud Westmore:
- son of George Westmore
- lived from 1918-1973
- largest building in Universal Studios Backlot is named after him
- worked for movies like 'Man of thousand Faces', 'To Kill a Mockingbird', 'Creatures from the black Lagoon', ...
- overall he worked for over 450 movies and TV productions
Ern Westmore:
- son of George Westmore
- lived from 1904-1967
- worked also as an actor
- twin brother of Percy Westmore
- he was leading the new makeup trends in the 30's
- was director of makeup on over 50 films
- worked for Eagle-Lion Studios, Warner Bros. Studios and RKO Studios
Frank Westmore:
- son of George Westmore
- lived from 1923-1985
- worked on films like 'Kung Fu', 'Farewell', 'Planet of Apes', 'My Lovely', 'The Towering Inferno',...
- worked for Paramount Pictures
Monte Westmore:
- eldest son of George Westmore
- lived from 1902-1940
- had 3 sons: Monty, Michael and Marvin (all of them were makeup artists as well)
- worked on ' The King of Kings', ' Rebecca', 'Mutiny on the Bounty', 'Gone with the Wind'
- worked for Famous Players -Lasky Studios and Selznick International Pictures
Percy (Perc) Westmore:
- son of George Westmore
- lived from 1904-1970
- Ern's twin brother
- became head of makeup for Warner Bros. Studios
- introduced different shades of hair colors in order for people to use makeup more accurately
- worked on films like 'The Roaring Twenties', 'Casablanca', 'The Private Life of Elizabeth and Essex', 'The Virgin Queen'
- helped Bette Davis to achieve a more historical look for her role as Elizabeth I in 'The Private Life of Elizabeth and Essex' by shaving back her hairline for a few inches as well as shaving of her eyebrows
Wally Westmore:
- son of George Westmore
- lived from 1906-1973
- mostly worked for Paramount
- worked on over 300 productions
- huge breakthrough with the makeup for 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'
- other films he worked on were 'Breakfast at Tiffany's', 'Island of Lost Souls',..
The sons of George Westmore established the 'House of Westmore' salon in 1935. It wasn't only for celebrities but also for any other makeup using person.

- founder and CEO of George Westmore Research Library and Museum in Burbank (California)
